How to check the exact variant, control gear and DALI controls: a checklist before ordering, DT8(Tc), scene testing and consultation preparation.
How do you check whether a luminaire will work with DALI controls?
Check the exact luminaire variant, its control gear and the functions of the application controller. A dimmable label does not establish DALI support, and DT8 alone does not identify the supported colour type. Confirm the assembly before ordering, then test the required scenes and low dimming levels before handover.
DALI is a digital lighting control protocol under IEC 62386. It supports addressing, groups and recalling configured scenes. One DALI-2 bus supports up to 64 control gear addresses and 64 control device addresses; one luminaire may contain several items of control gear.
Distinguish the luminaire, the control gear powering its light source, the application controller and inputs such as buttons or sensors. The bus also needs a power supply, which may be integrated into another device. The electrical designer should assess cabling, bus power and system capacity against the actual components.
The DALI Alliance lists certified components rather than complete luminaires. Request the identity of the control gear fitted to the ordered variant and compare it with the database record, including GTIN and hardware and firmware versions. A family name alone is insufficient.
For Tunable White, check DT8(Tc); for RGB, check the appropriate colour type, such as DT8(RGBWAF). The controls must also support the required function. D4i extends DALI-2 with specified data and power features; it is neither a synonym for Tunable White nor a requirement for every sensor application.
DALI-2 control gear follow a standardised dimming curve. Verify the lowest stable level, starting at a low level, flicker and noise for the actual control gear and light source. A logo or protocol name does not replace these specifications or an assembly test.
Practical applications
Residential (Penthouse, villas)
Start with the required behaviour: separate lighting layers, scenes and physical controls. Suitability depends on functions, cabling, budget and support; there is no universal threshold based on the number of luminaires.
Hospitality and Retail
Describe operating scenes and how staff will change them. For spaces requiring subtle dimming, request a demonstration of the planned assembly before delivery.
Offices
Define zones and the required response to occupancy and daylight. Check supported sensors and how the controller uses them; choosing a bus alone does not establish the resulting illuminance.
Recommendations
- Prepare a plan, exact variant list and scene descriptions including the controls. Identify decisions that are still open.
- Agree who will design the cabling, confirm components, programme scenes and carry out tests. Supplying luminaires does not by itself include these tasks.
- Include an address and group list, scene settings, a configuration backup and a component replacement procedure in the handover. Agree scope and access credentials with the appointed contractor.
Common mistakes
- Treating a dimmable label as confirmation of a particular interface.
- Ordering different control gear or another variant without rechecking the required functions.
- Relying on an app without agreeing everyday controls and behaviour during a failure.

No. Check the interface of the exact variant and control gear in its datasheet. An integrated dimmer, phase dimming and DALI are not interchangeable labels.
