Dimming LEDs is unlike dimming halogen. An LED is a semiconductor — it reacts instantly with no thermal inertia. That is why poor dimming shows up to the eye and the camera as flicker, hum or colour shift.

Methods include leading-edge and trailing-edge phase dimming, 1–10 V, DALI / DALI-2 and PWM. Suitability depends on the driver, LED source, load and controller. The method alone does not determine flicker, noise or the lowest usable level.

Assess temporal light modulation by waveform, frequency and depth. PstLM and SVM describe different visual effects; a single value or a flicker-free label does not guarantee camera suitability. Request data at intended dimming levels and test with the actual camera.

The dimming curve relates a control value to light output. The standardised DALI-2 curve enables repeatable control. A percentage in an app is not necessarily the percentage of light output or perceived brightness.

Warm Dim (dim-to-warm) reduces CCT as the light is dimmed. The actual range, for example 2700–1800 K, depends on the selected source and control; it does not apply to every dimmable luminaire.

The minimum dimming level belongs to the actual combination. Check manufacturer data, stability, flicker and start-up at low levels. Price and protocol do not imply a guaranteed range.

Practical applications

Bedroom & bathroom

Very low dim levels (≤ 5 %) for night mode, Warm Dim for evening; dimming percentage and CCT alone do not establish a biological effect.

Living & dining

For movie scenes verify stable low-level dimming; control the dining accent separately from ambient light.

Hospitality (hotels, Fine dining)

For hotel rooms verify smooth dimming down to the required orientation level. Restaurants can change lunch and dinner scenes; set percentages to suit the actual light in the room.

Offices & Smart home

DALI-2 plus daylight sensor holds constant desk illuminance and saves energy.

Architectural lighting

For linear profiles and artwork lighting, check colour shift across the required dimming range of the actual assembly. A driver label or quality claim does not guarantee stable CCT; Warm Dim changes it deliberately.

Recommendations

Check the control curve and smoothness of the actual assembly; logarithmic and square-law curves are not the same
Use Warm Dim in bedrooms, bathrooms and Fine dining
DALI-2 or 1–10 V where precision matters
For PWM, assess frequency, modulation depth and waveform across dimming; 1–4 kHz alone does not guarantee visual or camera suitability
Insist on an SVM value in the datasheet, not just 'flicker-free'

An incompatible dimmer and driver producing unstable light at low levels
Dimming LED strip without a compatible controller
No dimming at all in bedroom or bathroom
Trusting a 'dimmable' label without checking the method
Mixing drivers from different brands on one circuit (curve mismatch)

In summary

Dimming depends on the driver, source, controller and configuration. Verify range and temporal modulation for the actual combination at intended levels; SVM alone is insufficient for every situation.
