Wardrobe lighting: colour accuracy and dressing comfort
A wardrobe is where outfit decisions happen. High CRI, vertical light and integrated linear strips in the shelves are the minimum.

A wardrobe (walk-in or built-in) has one primary job: accurate colour judgement of clothing. A CRI 80 fluorescent is why a shirt looks beige at home and blue at work. The answer is CRI ≥ 95, CCT 3000 K and vertical surface lighting.
CRI is critical here. Ra ≥ 90 minimum, ideally 95 with R9 ≥ 50. Cheap LEDs fail on darker tones (black, navy, brown) that all look identical.
CCT 3000 K is the standard — a compromise between neutral 4000 K and warm 2700 K. At 2700 K whites turn yellow; at 4000 K material warmth fades. Tunable White switching 3000 K (morning) / 2700 K (evening) is the luxe solution.
Vertical illumination beats horizontal. A linear LED in the side panel of a shelf throws light top-down onto hanging garments, revealing colour, texture and stains. A ceiling downlight casts shadows and clothing stays in the shade.
For walk-in wardrobes combine linear in shelves, an accent above the mirror (vertical sconces like in a bathroom) and a dim cove ambient. A sensor turns on only the active zone — energy savings plus a nice reveal.
Thermal load matters in enclosed cabinets — pick high-efficacy LEDs with low heat output and check the maximum case temperature (Tc).
Practical applications
Walk-in wardrobe (Penthouse)
Linear in every shelf (3000 K, CRI 95), perimeter cove ambient, vertical sconces by the mirror, motion sensor; optionally Tunable White for AM/PM.
Hotel wardrobe (Hospitality)
Intuitive for guests — auto-on by door sensor, CCT 3000 K, CRI ≥ 95, linear in shelves, accent on the hanging rail.
Built-in wardrobe
At least one linear LED strip (CRI ≥ 90, CCT 3000 K) along the upper rail, door sensor on. Avoid fluorescents and halogens — short life and worse colour.
Commercial showroom (Retail)
CRI 95+, CCT 3000–3500 K, tracklight for flexible accent on the displayed piece plus tunable linear in shelves.

Common mistakes
- Single ceiling downlight — shadows on clothes
- Fluorescent or CRI 80 LED — false colours
- Cool light (4000 K+) — clothing looks dead
- No shelf lighting — dark zones
- No sensor — user forgets to switch off
